PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1983 from the Technical University of Lisbon, IST; postdoctoral fellow with Vincenzo Balzani, University of Bologna, Italy; Full Professor of Chemistry at the New University of Lisbon. Visiting Researcher, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA, 5 Março-26 Agosto 2007; Visiting Professor, Munster, Germany, 1-30, Abril 2008; Visiting Professor, Bordeaux, France, December 2010. Gulbenkian Prize of Applied Sciences and Technology 1998; (the most prestigious Foundation in Portugal); Ferreira da Silva Prize 2010, attributed by the Portuguese Chemical Society each 2 years (career prize); Honorary member of the Portuguese Chemical Society. He is author of 290 publications, h-index 49, in several fields of chemistry from sensors, optical memories to anthocyanins and related compounds. During the last years he focus his research on the evolution of the colour systems from the primitive plants to the angiosperms.
